Baseball in July
They say the games don’t matter until September (sometimes in August)… but, in July? Well, last night was quite the statement I would say. In the ongoing epic battle between the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox (this was the 2,000th game they played against each other in this incredible rivalry), a true pitchers duel emerged. And, perhaps their heir apparent to Roger Clemens. Gotta love the way that Joba Chamberlain doesn’t back down from challenges… oh, and also the way he doesn’t give up any runs, strikes out nine, walks but one in seven oh so solid innings… and the pattern in all his starts is that he appears to get even stronger the deeper in to the game he goes. Last night he retired the last 10 batters he faced.
Yankees/Red Sox duels are usually four plus hour marathon battles of attrition. Last night, a nifty game in under three hours… Nicely wrapped up by Mariano Rivera with the final five outs. Final Score: 1-0. Baseball for the purists. And I guess especially for Yankee Fans. Red Sox fans couldn’t be too pleased. By the way, I’ve never ever heard Fenway Park so quiet the entire evening.
The Yankees are now two games behind the Red Sox. Oh, and they still have two games to play this weekend. Both on national television which is the only appropriate stage for this production.
Who will be Bucky Dent this year?
Oh, and lest I forget in closing, what a totally AWESOME trade the Yankees made last night. They didn’t give up much, and they, in my very humble opinion, got a lot. Improving their outfield situation which has been decimated by injury with the addition of Xavier Nady; And, the left handed reliever they so desparately needed. These deals make the Yankees, though currently in third place, a solid playoff contender again.
Yep, they do play baseball in July.
