The Unaffordable Game of Baseball (and Other Sports)
It’s becoming virtually impossible to attend a game of any kind at the Major League level.
Two seats, $88.00
Hot Dog, Nachos, Cracker Jacks, Two Sodas, $25.50
Squishy, $4.75
Cab ride home, $12.00
Memories, priceless… well, not exactly, they did come with a price. Namely, $130.25. And that was without taking any kids, and limiting the amount of food we ate and no souvenirs. I figure if the whole family would have gone it would have easily cost $350.00. For a baseball game?!!
With astronomical salaries, outrageously priced stadiums, television scheduled to appeal to advertisers and not young children, is it possible that one day the bubble will burst? Do they care? They have TV deals, sponsorship, luxury corporate boxes. Do they need us? Surely they act like they don’t.
So what can we do? First suggestion I can think of is support the Little Leagues to encourage our children to play for the sheer enjoyment of the game (and for perhaps the juicy retirement they might provide you in the future… but I digress). And for role models take them to minor league games where you can get up close and personal with the players and all the action. Read books, and take them to museums and other cultural activies. I’m getting off subject now aren’t I? Sorry.
Just buy me some peanuts and cracker jacks, ’cause I surely can’t afford them for myself….

- All-Star Games I have a master plan for professional sports to (finally) do the right thing. I would like to see these "sporting" events become charitable events.
