Let’s Get Serious
For a moment. You know we can’t stay serious for much longer than that. So, what do I want to get serious about. Direction. Focus. Commitment. My friends, in these trying times, we have to keep the focus, stay committed, and continue in the direction that we’ve been heading in all these past six months.
Though the economy is in a state of turmoil currently, I can assure that it had nothing to do with the creation of this blog. But, if it did, wouldn’t that be so totally cool? See, I told you it wouldn’t last. So, I hope you enjoyed our moment of seriousness.
And now for something completely different…
A rant.
Enough already with politics. Enough already with this Presidential election. We can vote, we can have a majority, and it still might not matter. Hanging chads aside, we have this thing called the Electoral College. If someone who went to Electoral University for their post graduate degree might be able to help us out on this one.
Isn’t a democracy the voice of the people. And the majority wins. Well, my friends, let me tell you this. It ain’t necessarily so. See, the majority wins in each state. Each state is weighted (by the number of Electoral votes it gets). Now I guess things wouldn’t be so bad if their was a one to one relationship between the population of a state and the number of electoral votes it has (though it might be… can someone clue me in?) But, it’s winner take all in a state. So, a candidate could win 49 states by one vote… Lose the 50th state by 20 million votes, and would be sworn in come January of the following year as the President of these here United States. How’s that democratic?
I wonder if capitalism works the same way. If I pay one cent more than the balance due on 49 of my bills, but I let my mortgage lapse, do I “win”? I’m going to try that logic out soon.
If our founding fathers thought it was fair, who am I to argue with them? Besides, they can’t get a word in edgewise anymore. What do you think that they would think of our current situation. Do you think that this is what they envisioned? I guess the joke was on them. Or, perhaps us. Or, perhaps I should start taking things more seriously from this point forward.
