Jumping Back in to the “Pool”

After a few month hiatus, I’ve gone and done it.  And, I’ve done it for a very good cause.  My son.

I setup a 20 gallon freshwater tank in his room.  We’ve got some nice live plants, and today just added four fish (two red platty’s and two black mollies).

I grew up with a fish tank in my house which spawned (no pun intended) my love for tropical fish.  What a regal tank I remember we had.  I don’t think it was a big tank… 29 gallons tops.  But, we had angelfish and some discus in a well planted tank.  It was totally gorgeous.

When Matthew was born he used to watch the reef tank that we had at the time.  And, if we ever needed to calm him down all we had to do was put him in front of tank.  He just loved to sit there and watch all the beautiful fish.  So calming.  So serene.

When we set up the tank a few days ago all he wanted to do was sit and look at it - even though there were no fish in there.  For two days he asked “when are we getting the fish?”.  I told him in two days, on Sunday, we’d check the water chemistry and if all was well we’d go to the store and he could pick out a few fish to start off with.

One of the members of the NCAS Forum, Paul (fishmaster102) works at South Shore Tropicals, so we decided to check out the store and rely on Paul’s expertise to help us select the fish.  Paul was nice enough not only to check the water chemistry for us, but did a splendid job helping us pick the fish.

If you’ve never been to South Shore Tropicals, it’s a fabulous pet store.  It was my first visit there, and it certainly will not be my last.
