Generating Traffic

And no, not on the roads, thank you. I saw enough of that the other day when I “had” to venture in to the city on business. I’m talking traffic to your websites, blogs, forums, whathaveyou’s.

What have you tried to drive more traffic to your website (from this point forward, “website” refers all inclusively to blogs, forums, and the aforementioned catch-all whathaveyou’s)?

I’ve tried the following:

  • Submitting my websites to all the major search engines
  • Creating meta and keyword tags
  • Added my websites to toplists
  • I tried webrings, but that was so 1990’s that I dropped it
  • Submitted my rss feeds to all the major aggregators
  • Advertised on Craigslist
  • Where appropriate put links in to my signature files on my emails, and forum posts

I’m running out of ideas (and perhaps practical knowledge of how to get more eyes on my websites… and make them stick and come back).

My wheresoursquirrel.com domain is now sitting at 315,356 on Alexa.  I had peaked at about 250,000 then slipped back, and slowly started making my way back up the rankings.  But hey, I’m greedy, I want to be in the top 100,000 by the end of the year.  And then move progressively higher and higher from there.  But, I think there are significant benefits to being in the top 100,000 (I know they really start to keep an eye on you when you break that barrier).

So, please help me to help you (better content will keep you around y’know).  Please tell me how to get more people to my websites.

I promise to publish a blog entry and a forum thread on the Internet Board on the Squirrel Forum acknowledging the best / most effective suggestions, along with your name and your website (unless you desire your anonymity, in which case I will surely respect your wishes.
