Heroes
Why do we need them? Are they obsolete? It seems that every time we start to idolize someone and make them larger than life, they disappoint us. Something comes out that lessons them in our eyes. Yet, we keep searching. We keep hoping (beyond hope?). For the next Superman.
Who are today’s heroes?
- Political leaders? Umm, I don’t think so. Not any more. Who can remember the last time that we had a political hero?
- Sports Figures? Seems like most are just money hungry, self-centered, ego-centric jerks. There are a few exceptions. And, we do hope that they don’t disappoint one day. Coming to mind are Wayne Gretzky, Tiger Woods, Derek Jeter. Not a long list, is it?
- Pop Music Starts? Nah
- Heads of the Corporate Giants? Don’t make me laugh.
- Rescue workers (police, fire, etc)? That’s not a bad spot to place one’s adoration.
Do we really need heroes? I’d venture a guess to say “yes”. But, let’s be careful that we place our respect in the right spot. And, that there is a true universal acceptance of the meaning on “hero”.
But, the bottom line, is that you, and I, we should be heroes. And, we need to be the heroes to our children. To our co-workers. To our community. We can do it. Let’s start today by setting the right example. By treating others the way we want to be treated. By being a hero to your children. Teach them to love; Teach them values; Teach them respect; And honor.
Let’s make this world a better place.
